Scurlock Foundation Gives $1,000,000 for Future Growth at Texas Children’s
By Travis McClain

The Scurlock Foundation has given $1,000,000 to help advance Texas Children's priorities for future expansion.

Giving

Building on two decades of generosity to Texas Children’s Hospital, the Scurlock Foundation has given $1,000,000 to help advance the hospital’s priorities for future expansion. It is the largest gift the foundation has made to Texas Children’s.

“Houston is a growing city with a growing child population, and the hospital can meet the needs of the community,” said Elizabeth Wareing, vice president and trustee of the Scurlock Foundation.

Wareing said her family personally witnessed the benefits of a child receiving care at Texas Children’s when her nephew, Eddy S. Blanton, Jr., was born in 1980 with a life threatening illness he was not expected to survive. Thanks to treatment at Texas Children’s Hospital, however, today Eddy is very much alive and completing law school at the University of Texas. The experience continues to motivate the family to give back to the hospital that saved Eddy’s life.

Established in 1954 by Wareing’s grandfather, Eddy Scurlock, the Scurlock Foundation has a long history of supporting church-related and health care institutions in the Houston community.

“We are delighted to support the future of Texas Children’s Hospital and are tremendously proud of its accomplishments in delivering outstanding health care to children,” said Jack S. Blanton, Wareing’s father and a foundation trustee.

Today, Scurlock’s legacy is carried on by the Blanton and Wareing families, including
Wareing’s two brothers, Jack S. Blanton, Jr. and Eddy S. Blanton, Sr.

“My grandfather gave to his church, to hospitals and to educational institutions, and
we’ve tried to honor that tradition,” Wareing said.

Mark A. Wallace, president and chief executive officer of Texas Children’s, expressed his
gratitude for the family’s ongoing support. “Texas Children’s is proud to be one of the many organizations fortunate enough to count the Scurlock Foundation among its leading partners.”
