UH
Dance Marathon
University of Houston students held their first annual Dance
Marathon on February 8-9 on the UH campus. The 16-hour event called,
Dance On, raised $17,583, which exceeded the group’s first year
goal! The 9 member student executive committee started organizing
the event last May by recruiting sponsors, dancers, and dealing with
overall event preparations.
To keep the dancers moving and motivated, Dance Marathon included
several live bands, including the UH Cougar Band brass section, a
deejay, movies, ping pong, and a video game tournament. “It was a
test of everyone’s abilities to keep positive for 16 hours, yet it
was easy when we remembered why we were there,” said student Kelli
Gwen Harper, chair of the UH Dance Marathon program.
Remembering the reason they started the project was easy since
several Texas Children’s patient families attended the event to
thank dancers for their support. Nine year old Garrett Clark danced
with students and Keri Len Spivey’s family drove 3 hours to attend
so that Keri Len could sing before the closing ceremony. Nicky
Sauter attended with his family as did Julia Wagner.
“We are very appreciative of the students and faculty advisors who
committed their time to this program. One of the things we really
value as a hospital is that these young adults are learning about
philanthropy,” said Katie Kalenda, Children’s Miracle Network
program director. “Our sincere congratulations go out to everyone
who was involved!”
