The Blue Bird Circle Clinic had its
beginning as the “Little Hospital” on the grounds of the original
Methodist Hospital. Since 1949, the Blue Bird Circle Clinic has
specialized in the diagnosis and treatment of neurological disorders
in children. Once affiliated with The Methodist Hospital, a new
partnership was formed in 1998 with Texas Children's Hospital to
continue the clinic’s mission of comprehensive care to families.
At the core of this dynamic clinic are the Blue Bird Circle
volunteers. Attired in their signature blue smocks, they provide
invaluable assistance in various roles. Approximately 70 volunteers,
donating more than 1,100 hours a month, work in collaboration with
physicians, residents, neuropsychologists, a nurse practitioner,
social worker, and nine clinic staff to provide quality customer
service.
"Our clinic is unique," said volunteer
Barbara Brown. "We have always provided a multidisciplinary approach
and it shows. The volunteers and staff complement each other
extremely well."
Social worker Ann Alexander has been
with the clinic since 1968. She says the clinic’s emphasis on
family-centered care, coupled with the invaluable support of the
volunteers, are two reasons for its success.
"We try to provide patients and their
families with the best comprehensive service we can," Alexander
said. "The volunteers and staff have a mutual respect and admiration
for each other. It’s easy for us to stay committed when you have
such dedicated volunteers who support the clinic with a clear vision
and mission."
The clinic houses one of the largest
centers for the management of Rett Syndrome in the United States.
Families travel from throughout the world to seek treatment for this
neurological disorder that affects the normal development of girls.
In addition, the clinic tests children with learning and social
differences who are having academic or behavioral difficulties.
