Clinical child neuropsychology program    return to top

This program identifies the neuro-biological influences on a child’s development and recommends interventions and treatments. Patients are generally referred to this program from other physicians, usually hematologists/oncologists, neurologists, psychiatrists, endocrinologists and pediatricians.

A clinical child neuropsychologist evaluates the child to identify their cognitive and emotional strengths and weaknesses. The relationship between the child’s brain activity and behavior is measured through standard psychometric tests and other assessment techniques. The neuropsychologist then interprets the information and develops recommendations relevant to the child’s home, school and community.

The learning support center uses psychological and special education techniques to assist elementary- and secondary- level students who are experiencing developmental delays or learning deficits. Texas Children’s specialists help patients acquire the skills and information necessary to achieve their academic and professional goals.

A personal educational program is developed for each student after a consultation with parents, an analysis of prior assessment procedures and an evaluation of present academic skills.

Family therapy program    return to top

The family therapy program at the learning support center helps families adjust after disruptive events in their lives. Frequent sources of family distress include the birth of a child with a developmental disability, adjustment to a child’s chronic illness or disability, or adaptation to the death of a family member.

Each family is evaluated and a customized treatment plan is formulated to assist the family. Treatments offered include family crisis therapy, behavioral and cognitive-behavioral parent training, marital therapy and family systems therapy.

Clinic for attention problems    return to top

The Clinic for Attention Problems at Texas Children’s Hospital assesses and treats children who are developmentally unable to regulate attention. As a joint endeavor with the Texas Children's Hospital Learning Support Center and Baylor College of Medicine’s sections of pediatric neurology, developmental pediatrics and pediatric psychiatry, the clinic takes a multidisciplinary approach to diagnosis and to the plan for intervention.

Children receive a comprehensive neuropsychological evaluation and medical examinations. Parents are also an integral part of the assessment and are interviewed formally and informally by the psychologists and physicians during the diagnostic process. The neuropsychologists and other physicians evaluate the results of the assessments and cooperatively develop a treatment plan.

Program for Autistic Spectrum Disorders (ASD)    return to top

This multidisciplinary program includes a clinic that is designed to diagnose and treat children with ASD and Bridges, a preschool therapeutic program. The Clinic for the diagnosis of autistic spectrum disorders is a joint endeavor with Texas Children’s Hospital Learning Support Center, audiology, and occupational and physical therapy departments and Baylor College of Medicine’s sections of pediatric neurology, developmental pediatrics and pediatric psychiatry. The clinic uses the Developmental-Individualized-Relationship (DIR) -based therapeutic model for evaluating children with ASD.

Toddlers and preschool children evaluated by the clinic may apply to Bridges a therapeutic program for preschool age children with ASD.
