NEWS RELEASES
HOUSTON (Dec. 18, 2006)
– On Dec. 14, the 3rd annual Cure
Kids Cancer radiothon, benefiting Texas Children’s Hospital, hit
the airwaves on Cox Radio stations - The
New 93Q (92.9 FM) and Country
Legends (97.1 FM), and 1069
The Point.
Houstonians
came together once again in support of the patients treated at Texas
Children’s Hospital and Texas
Children’s Cancer Center, the largest pediatric oncology and
hematology program in the country. “We were once again amazed by the
giving spirit of our listeners and the Houston community and would
like to thank them for their support of this wonderful event,” said
Caroline Devine, regional vice president and market manager of Cox
Radio-Houston.
“The staffs
of The New 93Q, Country Legends and 1069 The Point had the unique
opportunity of meeting some of the most inspiring children you’ll
ever encounter,” added Devine. “It is those children battling cancer
who have become our heroes.”
Through the
generous donations of Houstonians, the radiothon netted
$1,218,096.38 in pledges for the fight against childhood cancer.
“Once again,
Houstonians have risen to the occasion and demonstrated their
generous spirit,” said Dr.
David Poplack, director of Texas
Children’s Cancer Center. “We are grateful to The New 93Q,
Country Legends and 1069 The Point for lending their support to such
an important cause. Cancer continues to be the leading cause of
non-accidental death in children. We extend our sincerest thanks to
those in our community who are eager to help us continue making
progress in the treatment and cure of pediatric cancer.”
In addition,
several Houston-area merchants supported the event through donations
of food, lodging, photography and patient gifts. “The success of the
radiothon could not have been possible without the generosity of our
community and sponsors,” said John Scales, senior vice president for
development at Texas Children’s Hospital. “The response from them
was absolutely overwhelming. We are indebted to them for their
support of such an incredible cause.”
This year’s
donations included generous in-kind contributions from the Marriott
Medical Center Hotel, Bayou City Wings, California Pizza Kitchen,
Chipolte Mexican Grille, CiCi’s Pizza, Coca Cola Bottling Company,
Costco Wholesale, Kohl’s Department Stores, McDonald’s, Goode
Company Bar-B-Que, Johnny Carino’s and Square Donuts.
