Houstonians wage war against childhood cancer
Radiothon drives in more than $960,000 for cancer research and awareness at Texas Children’s Cancer Center

HOUSTON – On Dec. 15, Taylor Wilkins celebrated his 14th birthday with more than 400,000 Houstonians on the airwaves via The New 93Q (92.9 FM) and Country Legends (97.1 FM), during the Cure Kids Cancer Radiothon at Texas Children’s Hospital.

Wilkins, a pediatric cancer patient who successfully completed treatment for myelodyplastic syndrome, a rare form of leukemia, was just one of the many patients who participated in the 2nd annual radiothon benefiting Texas Children’s Cancer Center, the largest pediatric oncology and hematology program in the country.
“We were once again amazed by the giving spirit of our listeners and the Houston community and would like to thank them for their support of this wonderful event,” said Caroline Devine, regional vice president and market manager of Cox Radio-Houston.

“The staffs of both The New 93Q and Country Legends had the unique opportunity of meeting some of the most inspiring children you’ll ever encounter,” added Devine. “It is those children battling cancer who have become our heroes.”

Through the generous donations of Houstonians, the radiothon netted more than $960,000 in pledges for the fight against childhood cancer.

“Once again, Houstonians have risen to the occasion and demonstrated their generous spirit,” said Dr. David Poplack, director of Texas Children’s Cancer Center. “We are grateful to The New 93Q and Country Legends for lending their support to such an important cause. Cancer continues to be the leading cause of non-accidental death in children. While survival rates for childhood cancer patients have increased to 70 percent, we can’t stop until we reach 100 percent. We extend our sincerest thanks to those who are eager to help us continue making progress in the treatment and cure of pediatric cancer.”

In addition, several Houston-area merchants supported the event through donations of food, lodging, photography and patient gifts.

“The success of the radiothon could not have been possible without the generosity of our sponsors,” said John Scales, senior vice president for development at Texas Children’s Hospital. “The response from them was absolutely overwhelming. We are indebted to them for their support of such an incredible cause.”

This year’s donations included generous in-kind contributions from the Marriott Medical Center Hotel, CiCi’s Pizza and Les Lemmons, JMH Market and Fresh Market Catering, Kohl’s Department Stores, McDonald’s, Goode Company Bar-B-Que, Greenberry’s Tea, and Mario’s Flying Pizza in Seabrook.
