HOUSTON (May 11, 2005) – Texas Children's Hospital
and Children’s
Miracle Network recently announced that
Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. has
reached an incredible milestone in the organization’s history –
donating and raising more than $300 million nationally for Children’s
Miracle Network hospitals over the past 18 years.
Donations made to the Children’s Miracle Network directly benefit 170
children’s hospitals in North America including Texas Children's
Hospital – Houston’s only Children’s Miracle Network affiliated
hospital. A total of 91 Houston-area Wal-Mart and SAM’S CLUBS
participate in the program, providing a very large support base for
the hospital.
“Participating in Children’s Miracle Network allows us to continue
providing the highest level of care to all patients, regardless of
their ability to pay,” explains Mark A. Wallace, president and chief
executive officer of Texas Children's Hospital. “We are deeply
grateful to be supported in this effort by the Wal-Mart organization,
its associates and its customers.”
Since 1987 residents and Wal-Mart employees across Houston have
generously given their time and money to support Children’s Miracle
Network, and most recently Texas Children's Hospital, through bake
sales, softball and golf tournaments, sales of the Children’s Miracle
Network miracle paper balloons and other fund-raising activities.
“Wal-Mart associates have a strong commitment to give back and help
others,” said Betsy Reithemeyer, vice president of Wal-Mart Corporate
Affairs. “One hundred percent of the dollars raised for Children’s
Miracle Network stays within the communities where funds are donated,
which is in step with our philosophy of giving back locally.
It is our
customers and associates who help make miracles possible each year for
the children at these hospitals.”
