NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS
Lufkin-based Foundation Pledges $2 million to Neurological Research Institute

The T.L.L. Temple Foundation is helping heal sick children with a $2 million gift to Jan and Dan Duncan Neurological Research Institute.

“This generous lead gift underscores the importance of the institute’s research to the future of cognitive brain disorders research. It is a testament to the Temple family’s longstanding tradition of community support and enrichment,” said Ralph D. Feigin, M.D., physician-in-chief at Texas Children’s Hospital and J.S. Abercrombie Professor and chairman of Pediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine.

The foundation’s philanthropic commitment will help Texas Children’s create a unique research institute designed specifically to accelerate the study and treatment of pediatric neurological diseases, said Feigin.

In the United States, more than 14 million children are affected by diseases like Rett syndrome, Down syndrome, autism, cerebral palsy, epilepsy and learning disabilities.

Worldwide, more than 450 million people are affected by neurological and neurodevelopmental disorders–and unfortunately, the numbers are increasing.

“For us, this is an incredible opportunity to support the preventive side of pediatric medicine,” said W. Temple Webber Jr., trustee of the Temple Foundation. “We feel that our support for this effort has the potential to impact countless children and families in our community and beyond who suffer from neurological diseases.”

Based in Lufkin, Texas, the Temple Foundation was established over 40 years ago by Georgie Temple Munz in honor of her father, Thomas Lewis Latané Temple, an East Texas lumberman and founder of Southern Pine Lumber Company.

The foundation has supported statewide programs in education, human welfare, the arts and health–particularly programs that seek to improve community and individual health through preventive care and education.

Since its inception in 1962, the Temple Foundation has awarded more than 3,000 grants totaling in excess of $210 million, making it one of the larger private foundations in the United States.

In addition to Texas Children’s Hospital, the foundation funds a variety of research efforts at institutions throughout the Texas Medical Center, including St. Luke’s Episcopal
Hospital, the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center and Baylor.
