Individual volunteers automatically
become members of
The Auxiliary to Texas Children's Hospital and are distinguishable
by their bright red vests or jackets and their official
identification badges.
The
Auxiliary has actively supported the hospital since
it opened its doors in 1954. Over the years, Auxiliary members have
served more than 2 million volunteer hours, and have donated over $3
million to help support pediatric patient care, education and
research.
Volunteers provide a number of services for patients and their families.
There are volunteer placements to suit a variety of interests and
talents. View the list of
services
that volunteers perform.
Auxiliary volunteers also are invited
to an annual recognition event, holiday activities and the annual
Texas Medical Center Salute to Volunteers.
The Auxiliary raises money for the
hospital largely through sales in its three Toy & Gift Shops,
the McDonald's restaurant at Texas Children's, and donations from
the community.
These funds benefit the hospital by providing the little extras that make the patients' stay
more pleasant, such as art supplies, puzzles and
games. The Auxiliary also
has donated $1 million to underwrite more that 40 pediatric
specialty fellowships for outstanding young doctors, $1.5 million to
build a special playground accessible to all children, and has made
significant contributions to the Hospital's capital campaigns.
The Auxiliary provides a broad range of
support for families in need. At the recommendation of a patient's
social worker or nurse, sandwiches can be provided to parents and
suitable clothing can be given to a patient. The Auxiliary also
provides a gift and balloon when a patient has a birthday while in
the hospital.
