Nursing at Texas Children's Hospital
Clinical Practice Council:
Serves as an interdisciplinary body to identify and collaborate on
practice issues in order to improve patient care outcomes.
Education Council: Serves as a
planning and coordinating body to ensure that nursing staff attain,
maintain and advance competence levels.
Leadership Council: Serves as a
vehicle for the Vice President for Patient Care Services and Chief
Nursing Officer to share information related to hospital operations
and receive information from nursing leaders within the hospital.
Serves as a vehicle to facilitate coordination of house-wide efforts
to ensure operational efficiency, achievement of performance
improvement priorities, and compliance with regulatory and
accrediting agency requirements.
Nursing Coordinating Council:
Serves as a ratifying body for nursing issues and delegate specific
issues to other councils.
Research Council: Serves as the
organizing body for all nursing research being conducted at Texas
Children's Hospital.
Advance Practice Committee:
Serves as a communication network for advanced practice nurses (APN).
Clinical Financial Committee:
Serves as a financial forum for all inpatient units and clinical
ancillary areas reporting to the Vice President for Patient Care
Services and Chief Nursing Officer to analyze and review hospital’s
financial performance and unit/department variances.
Clinical Specialist Committee:
Serves as a group of clinical experts to provide education and
consultation to staff and nursing leadership on clinical issues.
EXCEL + and Nursing Education Fund
Advisory Committee: Serves as a review and approval body for
nurses applying to:
- EXCEL + - a voluntary program
designed to provide staff nurses an opportunity to be recognized,
rewarded, and compensated for their commitment to excellence in
nursing practice.
- The Education Fund – a special fund
established to promote retention by providing financial support
for the professional development of registered nurses.

Nurse Staffing Advisory Committee:
Serves as a body to gather and analyze staffing related
information in order to determine staffing effectiveness.
Nursing Peer Review Committee:
Serves as a review body to:
- Evaluate the merits of a complaint
concerning a specific nurse’s practice
- Evaluate the quality of patient care
rendered by nurses
- Identify opportunities to improve
the quality of nursing practice
- Evaluate concerns about nursing
assignments that a nurse in good faith believes violates her/his
duty to a patient as required by the Board of Nurse Examiner’s
standards of practice on professional conduct.
- Evaluate complaints from nurses
regarding staffing effectiveness.
Nursing Product and Utilization
Review Committee: Serves as a venue to review and evaluate new
products and product issues related to the delivery of nursing care.
Performance Standards Committee:
Serves as a coordinating body to ensure the effective development of
performance standards for nursing personnel.
Policy and Procedure Committee –
General: Serves as a coordinating body for nursing policies and
procedures.
Policy and Procedure Committee –
Special Care: Serves as a coordinating body for policies and
procedures that are applicable to the special care units.
Unit Practice Committee: Serves
as a forum to share new ideas to enhance patient care and to
identify and resolve issues impacting the delivery of quality
