2006 awards and honors

Texas Children’s 2006 Nurse of the Year
Eden Cadiang-Gopal, registered nurse in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit II, was named 2006 Nurse of the Year.

The award, established in 1985 through an anonymous donor and the Junior League of Houston, honors outstanding nurses who demonstrate professionalism, teamwork, Service with HEART and dedication to family-centered care. Candidates are nominated by a member of their leadership team, and winners are selected by a blind panel of nurse leaders.

Cadiang-Gopal has worked at Texas Children’s for more than six years.

Texas Children’s 2006 Preceptor of the Year
Mindy Purser, registered nurse in 7 Abercrombie, was named 2006 Preceptor of the Year.

Nursing established the award in 1999 to acknowledge the preceptor role as integral to the success of Texas Children’s nursing program. Preceptor candidates are nominated by staff nurses, many of whom are the preceptors’ current or previous orientees. Winners are selected by a blind panel from Clinical Training and Development.

Purser is a 15-year veteran at Texas Children’s.

Society of Pediatric Nurses (SPN) Best Practices Essay Contest
Two registered nurses on 11 West Tower, Lisa Dominick and Andrea Troth, received an honorable mention award for their submission to the Society of Pediatric Nurses (SPN) Best Practices Essay Contest.

Their essay describes how the Unit Practice Committee (UPC) collaborated with physicians to improve patient care by developing pre-printed, standardized admission and discharge orders.

Troth is the current chair of UPC, and Dominick is a mentor and past chair. The essay was published in SPN News.

Houston Chronicle Salute to Nurses
Half of the nurses recognized by the Houston Chronicle in its special 2006 Salute to Nurses work for Texas Children’s. A panel of nursing experts assembled by the Chronicle selected the winners from hundreds of nominations.

These nurses were honored at a special luncheon at The Four Seasons Hotel:

Sarah Clunie, Heart Center
Betsy Hayslett, Gastroenterology and Nutrition
Barbara Richardson, Progressive Care Unit
Jacquelynn Roshto, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
Debora Ybarra, Liver Center

Texas Nurses Association Celebration 2006
Twenty exceptional nurses were honored at the Texas Nurses Association Celebration 2006, and five of them work at Texas Children’s.

The Texas Nurses Association holds the annual nursing celebration to recognize outstanding nurses in a variety of categories from all areas of practice, including patient care, education, research and administration. Colleagues, families and friends may complete nomination forms and submit them for blind review. A panel reviews the nominations and makes a selection based on multiple criteria.

These nurses were recognized for excellence in their profession:

Carol Carrier, Newborn Center
Cara Simon, Cancer Center
Tangula Taylor, Acute Care
Carmen Watrin, Heart Center

ADVANCE for Nurses 2006 Best Nurse Leader
Marilyn Hockenberry was named the 2006 Best Nurse Leader by ADVANCE for Nurses, a publication that is distributed to registered nurses in metro areas of Texas and Louisiana. She serves as director of the Center for Research and Evidence-Based Practice.

Good Samaritan Foundation award for 2006
Helen Currier received a 2006 Good Samaritan Foundation award for “Clinical Practice in a Large Hospital Setting (400 or more beds)”. Nominations were solicited from institutions in the 13 counties of the Houston/Galveston Area Council. One candidate was chosen from each of the following categories:

  • Clinical Practice in a Large Hospital Setting (400 or more beds)
  • Clinical Practice in a Community Hospital Setting (less than 400 beds)
  • Practice in Home Healthcare/Hospice
  • Instructing in an Academic Setting
  • Advancement of the Nursing Profession (community member)
