Three Day Intensive on Treating the Child with Hypotonia
October 31-November 2, 2008

Course Description
This three day intensive workshop on treating the child with hypotonia will focus on specific strategies to improve motor control in this population. Techniques to improve proximal control, sustained postural movements against gravity, and symmetrical alignment will be demonstrated through use of videotapes, as well as patient demonstrations and practice labs. Participants will learn treatment strategies to improve functional performance and independence in children with hypotonia.

Course Objectives

  • Discuss the underlying motor organization issues seen in hypotonia.
  • Plan and implement a therapy program for the hypotonic child.
  • Analyze movement patterns of the hypotonic.
  • Determine which muscle the hypotonic child overuses for stability.
  • Practice a variety of facilitation techniques for head control, upper and lower extremity control, and general posture.

About the Instructor
Barbara Hypes, is a pediatric physical therapist who is nationally renowned for her comprehensive and engaging teaching style and her clinical excellence. She is trained in both pediatric Neurodevelopmental Treatment and baby treatment. She has been teaching continuing education courses for therapists, teachers and parents throughout the United States and Canada since 1985. Ms. Hypes has worked in a variety of physical therapy programs in the Milwaukee area where she is currently in private practice treating all ages. She has produced five videotapes and published a book (currently in its second printing) to assist therapists in treatment of children. She has assisted in teaching the pediatric 8 week Neuro-Development treatment course and has contributed an appendix to the book Improving Upper Body control- An Approach to Assessment of Tonal Dysfunction by Regi Boehme.

2:15-3:00 Discussion of goals of demonstration child
3:00-4:30 Observe video of major problems

Day 2
9:00-10:30 Lecture on Muscles used to collapse for stability
10:30-10:45 Break
10:45-12:00 Lab on manipulating center of mass
12:00-1:00 Lunch (on your own)
1:00-2:45 Lab on strengthening and endurance
2:45-3:00 Break
3:00-4:00 Treatment demonstration
4:00-4:30 Discuss demonstration regarding goals and home carryover

Day 3
9:00-10:30 Group discussion on equipment needs for the hypotonic patient
10:30-10:45 Break
10:45-12:00 Videotape on treatment principles for this patient population
12:00-1:00 Lunch (on your own)
1:00-2:00 Treatment demonstration
2:00-2:15 Break
2:15-4:30 Wrap up activities in lab and overall questions
