  Texas Children’s Neurophysiology Department

The neurophysiology department provides a wide range of specialized tests and consultative services essential to the diagnosis and treatment of neurological disorders and sleep disorders. These services are available to outpatients on a referral basis, as well as to inpatients.

Neurophysiology includes four specialized areas of testing and treatment:

  • The EEG lab (electroencephalography)

  • Intraoperative monitoring

  • Sleep disorders center (sleep analysis)

The neurophysiology department has received national recognition due to Dr. Peter Kellaway, a preeminent investigator, educator, and practitioner of neurophysiology and epilepsy. He helped establish the field of neonatal and pediatric EEG and clinical neuro-physiology, has fostered research, and advocated for a comprehensive approach to care for children with epilepsy. Dr. Kellaway was the first director of the Blue Bird Circle Clinic for Pediatric Neurology.

  • Epilepsy monitoring unit

Technologists perform electroencephalograph, intraoperative evoked potential monitoring, and long-term video EEG monitoring during the day.

Polysomnogram (sleep test) studies are performed on the night shift. Emergency testing is available on-call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week through technologists and neurophysiologists.

Diagnostic procedures include routine and complex EEG, ambulatory EEG, EP (evoked potential), intraoperative monitoring, polysomnography, multiple sleep latency testing, long-term video EEG monitoring, WADA (intracarotid amobarbital injection) testing, and brain mapping.

The Neurophysiology department works closely with clinics throughout the hospital, particularly:

Research done by neurophysiologists at Texas Children's has resulted in portable bedside video EEG becoming a standard of care in neonatal intensive care units around the country.
