Texas Children’s Diabetes Care Center

The diabetes
care center treats and educates both established and newly diagnosed
patients and their families in self management of all aspects of the
types 1 and 2 diabetes.
In addition, refresher education is available to established
diabetic patients and/or to referred inpatients with diabetes. The
clinic team consists of a nurse educator, dietitian, physician and
social worker.
Not too long ago, type 2 diabetes, commonly known as adult onset
diabetes, was rarely seen in children. Now, the number of children
diagnosed with this disease, which is more common in overweight
children, is on the rise, exposing them to serious health risks.
Some 30 percent of
children newly diagnosed with diabetes have type 2 diabetes – close
to 75 new cases each year at Texas Children’s alone. To address the
needs of these children, Texas Children’s has designed a special
program. Each child works one-on-one with a dietitian and a diet
educator, and a four-session seminar is offered. The family-based
program encourages multiple changes in physical activity, diet and
lifestyle.
Texas Children’s has one
of the country’s largest clinics for type 2 diabetes, following
close to 300 patients. The program was recently named one of 12
centers in the country that will participate in a national trial to
determine the best treatment for this type of diabetes. Texas
Children’s will provide more patients than any other hospital to the
seven-year project, which started late last year.
