NEWS RELEASES
HOUSTON (Dec. 21, 2007) –
For the fourth year in a row, airwaves were filled with the
courageous stories of young cancer patients, former patients and
their families in an effort that netted $2,100,554.00 in
pledges for the fight against childhood cancer. The jocks of The New
93Q, Country Legends 97.1, 106.9 The Point and 107.5 K-Hits, were
not just spinning records as they broadcasted live from Texas
Children’s Cancer Center—they were breaking them. This year’s
Cure Kids Cancer Radiothon raised more money than ever
before. The record-breaking amount raised in this year’s Radiothon
was largely made possible by a $1 million donation from an anonymous
donor.
The money raised
will help support innovative research and
treatment advances aimed at curing and
preventing childhood cancer. The funds will
also facilitate the patient care and
education at
Texas Children's Cancer Center – the
largest pediatric hematology and oncology
center in the nation. “The cost of
conducting life-saving research is
extraordinary and we are increasingly
dependent on the giving spirit of those
eager to help us work toward our goal of
curing childhood cancer,” said
Dr. David Poplack, director of Texas
Children’s Cancer Center.
The Radiothon is organized each year by
Katie Kalenda, Development Manager at Texas
Children's Hospital and Program Director for
Children’s Miracle Network. The 3-day
Radiothon is part of the
Cure Kids Cancer Coalition – a network
of pediatric cancer centers, which raises
funds and educates the public about the
important, ongoing work in the country’s
finest pediatric cancer centers.
Without the partnership between Texas
Children's Hospital and
Cox Radio-Houston, the success of the
event would never be possible. "Through our
partnership with Cox Radio - Houston we are
able to tell the very compelling story of
our patients to a massive audience, and
because of the enthusiastic partnership of
so many departments within the hospital,
we are able to reach new levels of support
each year," said Katie Kalenda.
"Cox Radio - Houston's commitment to
Texas Children's Cancer Center is
tremendous,” noted John Scales, senior vice
president of Development at Texas Children's
Hospital. “Their philanthropic leadership in
the Houston community sets a wonderful
example, and we are fortunate to have them
as a partner in our mission to heal sick
children."
